Field Section Manager for Radiation Protection, OPG
Joe has always found enjoyment in solving big challenges. It’s one of the reasons the natural problem solver was drawn to the nuclear industry in the first place, joining OPG in 2008 as a Radiation Protection Technician. Now a Field Section Manager for Radiation Protection at OPG’s Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, Joe oversees the station’s Field Radiation Protection team and monitors the radiation levels of nuclear professionals working at the plant.
In addition to monitoring radiation levels, Joe helped introduce the use of remote monitors inside nuclear reactor units, an innovative technology that provides real-time data about hazard levels. He was part of the team that successfully implemented the remote monitoring devices at OPG’s Pickering Nuclear GS, earning recognition by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO). “I’ve always been someone who liked finding solutions to challenges, because when I do, it’s a big sense of accomplishment,” he said. “Safety is our overriding priority, so while we want to help get the work done, we can only do that when we’ve determined it can be done safely.”
To balance a busy work life, the father of three children makes sure he finds recreational time with his wife and kids where he lives in Port Perry. “Being a dad is one of the things I’m most proud of,” Joe said. In addition to coaching his son’s soccer and lacrosse teams, he plays in the Ontario Hydro soccer league.
